Before You Gift A Pet

Posted on | December 17, 2011 | No Comments

Christmas is upon us yet again and most of us are faced with the question “what do I get ……. for Christmas?” Sometimes, when it seems impossible to find that perfect gift, people will choose to gift a pet on a last minute impulse or as an act of desperation.

If it sounds like I’m talking about you, I seriously urge you to reconsider. Even a small, easy to care for pet may not be right for the person you’re thinking of giving it to. It seems that Christmas is often a time when puppies, kittens and other pets are given to people who they are unsuitable for.

Becoming a new pet owner should only happen after a lot of consideration. There are many things that need to be thought about. Some things the “want to be pet owners” might want to talk over include:

  • who’s going to be responsible for the pet
  • how much time can be spent with the pet (especially if it needs training)
  • what type of pet will be suitable for the lifestyle of the pet owners
  • does the pet need a lot of space, training, grooming, food, exercise
  • what is the average lifespan of the type of pet that’s being considered

You see there are so many things that need to be taken into consideration, that it is very difficult to choose a pet for someone else. Sadly this is why there are so many puppies and kittens dumped a few weeks or months after Christmas.

Ideally a pet becomes a part of a family. So again, it is hard to know what pet may be right for another. So I ask you…. are you sure that the pet you want to gift will be well loved and cared for? If you aren’t sure, then please find a different gift.

Merry Christmas to all animal lovers,

Cat & Pet Rat Are Friends

Posted on | November 19, 2011 | No Comments

Take a look at this cute video – it just goes to show that our pets can all get on… even the cat with our pet rats.

I think this is so cute – if my kids weren’t grown up and left home, I’d be thinking about getting more pet rats again :)
